Flash & Studio Photography Classes

Posted on 09 April 2009 by Alfie Goodrich

Japanorama is pleased to announce a new series of photographic classes for the more experienced photographer who wants to take their imaging to an entirely new level.

Ever had a day when the light from the sun was just dismal, unworkable, and providing you with uninspiring shots? Don’t worry, everyone – even Annie Leibowitz – has these days. That’s where shooters who can bring their own light to the equation distinguish themselves from the rest. In these classes you will learn how to manipulate, control and ultimately master professional lighting with off-camera flash. Indoors, outdoors, bad weather or good weather, at the end of this series of lessons you will be able to demonstrate almost limitless versatility in creating amazing and eye-catching images

These classes have a substantial technical element to them and are suitable for people who are already comfortable with the concepts of shutter, aperture and ISO to control exposure. That said, beginners will still benefit as the lessons are in a group format (never more than 6) to stimulate creativity and bounce ideas around. Over a sequence of classes we will take you through everything you need to know from gear choices to becoming completely proficient in lighting your subjects, and how to do it quickly. We will shoot interesting models and you will be set a variety of small projects in each area in order for you to maximize your versatility with flash.

Advanced classes can be taken concurrently with regular classes, and occasional large-scale workshops will be held to showcase the work we produce.

Gear-wise all you really need is a DSLR with a hotshoe and the ability to manually control exposure through aperture, shutter and ISO. If you already have a hotshoe flash or several, great, but if not, don’t worry as you will be able to use our equipment.

The studio has a variety of interesting backdrops/props and a spacious roof where photos can be shot and beers had after a satisfying lesson. Lessons are held on weekends and are sequential so if you happen to miss one, you can make it up in another group or one-to-one lesson at another time.

Lessons will usually be held on weekends and typically will last between an hour and 90-minutes. If you are interested in the idea of being able to get great shots wherever, whenever with minimal gear, contact us and book in your lesson!

Lesson costs:

  • We’ll be having one-off lessons. These are 8000Yen for 90-120-minutes.
  • Lessons as part of a course are 6000Yen and are typically between an hour and 90-minutes long.

Neither of the teachers are what you would call ‘clock watchers’ so you won’t find yourself thrown out as the clock strikes the hour!

Access:
Our studio is conveniently located near Mejiro Station on the Yamanote Line, or Gokokuji on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. You can also get there via the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line, via Zoshigaya Station. However, this is the easiest: got to Gokokuji Station [Y-11 on the Yurakucho Line] and come out of exit 6. Turn right [i.e. keep the main road on your left] and take the first right-turn. You should now be walking up a hill and will soon go under an overpass. After going under this, take the sixth left turn and walk to the end of that street. Turn right and you should now be looking at a lamp shop. The studio entrance door is on the left of the shop as you look at it. Hurrah! The studio is on the fourth floor. There is no lift. Sorry. Phone us if you have issues: 070 6947 7149. The shop you see in the street view below with the red awnings is the aforementioned lamp emporium.
