Photography Tours of Japan

Posted on 24 September 2009 by Alfie Goodrich

Photographic Tours of Tokyo, Japan: Tokyo-based professional photographer & photography teacher as your guide. If you are either a keen photographer or just want to take advantage of the fact that our photographer wanders, on average, around 60km a week through Tokyo shooting photos, why not book yourself on one of our photo walks?

One of the attractions of Japanorama’s Photo Tours is that our photographer still gets as excited about Tokyo and Japan as he did when he first came here almost ten years ago. That enthusiasm, backed up with good local knowledge, makes him a great guide. Not only do we cover the main tourist areas of Tokyo – Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Tsukiji for example – we also love getting off the beaten track and showing visitors some of the more interesting and lesser-known parts of town.

Alfie’s photography teaching also means that you can combine taking in the sites of Tokyo with learning something new about taking photos.

Whether you are a serious tourist and hobbyist photographer, or a serious photographer who loves travelling we have something to offer you.

We operate a few flavours of photo tours and walks in Tokyo with options that will excite – we hope – everyone. Here are some examples of the sites we take in and what you might expect to see when you get there. Each walk takes about four hours. That is a relaxed four hours, mind you, with plenty of time for walking at a casual pace and stopping to take photos.

Shibuya: the world famous crossing, high-rise buildings and street culture of Shibuya.

.

Ya-Ne-Zen, Ueno and Ameyoko: a walk around the fascinating areas bordering Ueno Park, ending up at the bustling street market of Ameyoko.

.

Asakusa-Kappbashi-Ueno: take in the avant-garde architecture of Philippe Starck, the old temples of Asakusa, the shopping mall of Nakamise and the old streets around the temples. Then head through Kappabashi – famed for its kitchen and restaurant parephenalia shops – and through to Ueno.

.

Tsukiji: this one is for the early-risers amongst you as the fish market proper starts around 5am. The bustling street markets, food stalls and atmosphere of the area outside of the main market are as stimulating if you can’t manage the early call! There are two articles about Tsukiji on this site, here and here, both made up from pictures shot during our tours. The fishmarket tour is one of our most popular and whilst access to the auction can never be guaranteed, we do guarantee an exciting walk around the market itself. There is Googlemap and links to photos here.

.

First Two Stations of the Old Tokaido Road: one-day walk from Nihombashi to the remains of the historical execution grounds at Suzagamori.

.

Harajuku & Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park and Omotesando: take in the street fashion, culture and buskers that inspired Gwen Stefani and many others; walk the fashionable shopping streets of Omotesando, ending up in the tranquility of the Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park.

.

Sugamo & Rikugien Park: a lesser-known part of northern Tokyo but famous in its own right for the Sugamo Jizodori shopping street and the beautiful Rikugien Koen [park].

.

Ginza, Yurakcho, Shimbashi: the famous shopping streets of Ginza, the camera shops of Yurakcho, and the busy railway arches, eating and businessman’s entertainment area of Shimbashi. Yurakcho also has a wonderful flea market and antique market on alternating Sundays. Well worth a visit for some trinkets and some great photo opportunities.

.

Train-spotter’s tour: a trip around the Yamanote line, bullet-trains at Tokyo and Ueno stations, the railway museum at Omiya.

.

Photo Tours in the Rest of Japan: we also do, by prior arrangement, photo tours of other areas outside of Tokyo. Here are some of the areas we visit:

  • Hakone and Mount Fuji: Lake Ashinoko, Mount Fuji and the Hakone hot springs [onsen]
  • Tokyo-Shikoku-Hiroshima-Tokyo: bullet trains all the way and a boat trip across the inland sea from Shikoku to Hiroshima; the A-Bomb Museum and the famous Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima.
  • Southern Hokkaido: Visit Lake Toya, Hakodate, Otaru, the Nikka Whisky Distillery and many other locations in the South Eastern corner of Hokkaido.

Many, many more tours than this and we try and tailor the experience for individuals as much as we can. So, please drop us a line via our contact page to find out more about our photographic tours of Tokyo and Japan.

Some other routes we have been doing recently:

  • Shinjuku to Okubo via Kabukicho – map here
  • Azabu-juban to Shibuya along the Shibuya River – map here
  • Ikebukuro to Zoshigaya – map here
