The Commute

Posted on 27 April 2010 by Irwin_Wong

Here’s a fun little project you can do on your own – shoot your commute and post your results to flickr

We see it everyday but tend not to notice any of it – possibly because we’re caught up in thinking about the workday to come or trying to ignore the busy crowds around us.  Either way, our commute is something that’s unique to all of us (that is, unless you live in the same building with someone who goes to your exact same workplace!).  And it would be interesting what you could find if you took notice and decided to try to shoot it for once.

So – the project is: shoot your commute.  The brief is flexible – I shot mine with a fixed 35mm f/1.4 at f/2, very rapidly, in order to kind of capture the feeling of being ‘on the move’.  Some of them were prefocused shots, and some of them I shot with my eye in the finder.  But that’s how I did it.  If you want to bust out a tripod and get some long exposures of the rush or if you want to get a monopod and wide lens and a cable release above the crushed people in the train, go for it.  The idea is just to shoot your commute and put your spin on it. If possible though, try and do it in one go, to give it some sense of continuity.  The aim of this project is to help you to notice the interesting things amidst what you are surrounded by everyday.

If you want to put your results up for people to see, post them to flickr with the tag ‘japanoramacommute’, and we’ll get some slideshows going.

Here’s a slideshow of some shots that I did on the way to my station – looking forward to seeing your version of it!

well… I use to do it a lot… with my iPhone on my way to work… but I guess it doesn’t fit here as a result of this project, right? Nice exercise anyway!

Doesn’t matter what camera you shoot them on….. :-)

I mean… not because of the camera… but because I make my pictures without any especific purpose… just documenting what catches my attention! ;) they are not result of a project or something… but I will post it on my flickr and you can decide ;)
