Finding the shot of Hayao Miyazaki this morning made me go through a few more of my old folders of shots from 2008.
I put together this triptych because it pretty much symbolises what an amazing year I had in 2008 as regards meeting and photographing people who have iconic status for me and many others around the world.
Lech Walesa was such a character from my youth: it was 1979 and 80, I was ten or eleven years-old and watching the TV gripped by the events in Gdansk. It was electric to watch and to wonder if that effect that was occuring via Solidarity and Walesa might spread and change Europe in my lifetime. Making eye contact with Mr. Walesa was something very special.
Yoko Ono… well, no intro required. The thing I remember most from meeting her was when she said, with a cheeky smile on her face: 'Despite what people say, I'm not a witch you know..'
Plus, I got to see her eyes. After years of seeing photos of her wearing huge sunglasses, that was something special.
