Summer in Tokyo | Mother and daughter, Akihabara

Was digging through my back-catalogue today: this one is from 2010. In fact, two years ago exactly. I remember it being a viciously hot day.

The weather at the moment is cooking up pretty good. Not a big fan of summer in Japan: too humid and the sunlight is so much brighter than the UK.

Still, don't miss UK summers either.

Gear?
Nikon D700
Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Ai
Focus set to 3m, shot from the hip at f/2
Black and white done in-camera

  1. Have you taken pictures of the seaside? I would love to have a look at them!

  2. Thank you +Alfie Goodrich  this is a True inspiration, I came here cause you +1 my first ever pictures/attempt at street photography and it was nerve wrecking taking pictures of random people without their permission most of the time, but seeing this gives me all the kick and desire to go out. Once I got back from the streets I felt so incredible accomplished and close to the random strangers I captured through my lens…..such a wonderful art.

  3. nice

  5. Great shot. I"ll have to try zone-focussing a bit more.

Maybe I'm looking back through rose-tinted glasses, but I miss UK summers. What is it you didn't like about them?

  6. :)

  7. Did you use something to give some light to the mother? almost seems it's bouncing somewhere

  8. Hi +Oscar Blasco Maestro . It was a little 'dodging' in the post-processing. I use the Nik Color Efex Pro plugin for Photoshop and it has a 'Darken/Lighten Centre' tool which allows very good localised light manipulations. For me this is way better than the 'dodge' or 'burn' tools in Photoshop itself and gives a finish which is more like the dodging and burning I used to do in the darkroom.

  9. Thanks for sharing the info, I will take a look into that plugin.

  10. 2010 was a scorcher. I remember cos we were in the cool of Cambridge while our colleagues in Japan were roasting away.
