The Ship By the Road, Kesennuma

Shooting up in tsunami-hit Miyagi Prefecture for a client.

This ship is still where it rested after the tsunami. Under the bow there's a car, crushed. A small shrine is set up by the mid section of the ship.

It's become a potent symbol of the disaster, this ship.

  2. Que triste ver o país onde morei anos, destruído. Porém, o povo é forte e o país esta se levantando e tentando esquecer esse desastre.

  7. Thanks for all the comments. Sorry I can't comment on most of them… Portuguese is not my strong point.

+Jeremy Dickinson : yes, there is a degree of local consternation over this wreck. It'd be a big project to get rid of it but a lot of people want it gone. There are so many decisions to be made in this area and the many like it and right now those decisions aren't getting made, for a number of reasons. On a practical level, this ship straddles a side-road next to the main road. It sits on plots of land that were formerly businesses. For now at least a lot of people are visiting it and that means a little income for those who have restaurants, shops and businesses nearby: there is a collection of around 25 small business units that have been set up in 'temporary' [but very well built, semi-permanent looking] buildings.

+Mary Bunting Myself and my family live in Tokyo and we were all home on 3/11. My wife's family live mostly in Fukushima. They're outside of the worst hit areas there but their situation remains a worry in the long-term.

+Rob B. I know of the Photohoku initiative, thanks.

+Lajos Koszti Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, in case you didn't know.

As for why I shot this the way I did…. I was out shooting a documentary with my 'proper' cameras. Instagram for me is a quick way of preserving a moment and instantly sharing it with people. If you've used it, you'll know that one doesnt get a zoomable preview of the photo before publishing it. So it's hard to see the possible downsides of the effect that has been applied. Which, in this case, was applied mainly to even out the dynamic range of the shot: the hull of the ship is dark and against a bright background of the sky.

  8. amazing image…

  9. Grandeur !!!
