I have some major issues with the server which are beginning to do my bloody head in. Every person at the help desk trying to suggest it's a wordpress plugin error. Well, if I can't even log in to the server that doesn't sound likely… does it? And they were doing maintenance yesterday. Erm, coincidence? Sort it out for fuck's sake….

After seeing your post I tried browsing http://japanorama.co.uk and it worked fine for a minute, but yes, suddenly dead for me too.
If you haven't installed any WP plugins recently, it certainly doesn't seem likely that that would be the culprit.
Is it only logging on to your WP install that's not working, or can you not even FTP into your site?

Can't do anything. Can't even log into the control panel for the server. And they are trying to say it's a plugin issue when I haven't installed anything new recently. Maybe not for two months. Am with Bluehost. Usually very good but last three days have been very annoying out of character for them. Had four years of almost trouble free hosting, with maybe one outage every three or four months for a very short space of time each time. Today and yesterday pissing me off.

I was also going to ask if there's a possibility your website was under attack since I've noticed a large uptick in login attempts to my own site lately (plus one of my subdomains was indeed hacked a couple months ago), but your host should be able to at least detect that and alert you to the fact.
Your site seems to be sporadically locking up – I'll click on a link and it'll spin for a while, but does eventually get through. But if you can't even get on your server control panel then I too can't see how it has anything too do with a wordpress plugin…

Not sure if you got it fixed. Loads for me now, but slow.

Not fixed. Cant load wordpress control panels, can't load server control panel. Someone on FB suggested that this is part of some global slowdown that has been going on. He's a tech guy and something's been up of late, apparently.

That certainly doesn't sound like a plugin issue unless its only affecting your wp install itself. I had some issues like this with a previous host of mine. When they started suggesting I contact my internet provider for my home I left them for another company. Admitting they were having some server issues and downtime would be annoying, but I would have understood a short outage – these things happen. If this is the sort of customer service that shows up more than once for your site I'd consider host shopping.

Been very happy with Bluehost for five years. There have been outages but nothing too long and they have always dealt with it well.. until now. There is no way that this is a wordpress issue.. especially when I havent installed any new plugins for over a month and this problem has just cropped up in the past two or three days. Total lack of access to the CPanel is not indicative of a plugin issue. I sent them a long email earlier. If they still suggest the same thing as they were earlier, then they get told to sort it or I am off. Lots of errors int he log, last time I looked, with sites/domains that are not mine. If someone else on this shared server is fucking it up I have told them already that they should sort it out and then move me to another box.

Finally, it seems, have someone from their support team who cares as much as usual… she's been looking into things for 15mins now. We'll see what comes of it.

Right, if you are hosted by Bluehost and ever need to use their support, ask for Amanda G. She spent 25mins getting to the root of my issues on the server: abusers of the service, who were on my shared server [now suspended] and an IP that was attempting a DDOS attack. She has sorted everything out, put my server on a watch-list so that admins can periodically check everything is OK. When she asked if she do anything else for me, I asked her if she'd mind popping round the store to get me some cigarettes whilst I put the kids to bed…. that got a 'LOL'. So she has a sense of humour as well as being good at her job. Awesome

Took another 2hrs of support live-chat today to finish the job off. There were more problems after what was a very trouble-free morning. Afternoon totally wasted as far as work was concerned but things are back again now and I finally took the opportunity to throw the ultimatum into the mix:
'look, I have had a good five years of service but two months of slow-down and two full days of the server off is just too much so sort it out or I am off to another host"
Seems to have worked, for now.

Thanks Marc. For now all seems ok.. but just gonna check now and see what the morning has brought. Moving really is last thing on my mind. I host my own sites and about half a dozen other people's. Moving hosting and domains is a pain I want to avoid unless it's absolutely necessary because, however good someone is, they really are sort of all the same at the end of the day. I used to run a web design business and after going through four hosts I ended up getting servers built, renting rackspace for them and doing my own hosting. I dont have the ability to do that right now and dont really want to. Keeping an eye on Bluehost. Have stored some credit in the bank with them this week for pushing my problems through and being vindicated for doing so.. as they found significant problems that they wouldnt have done if I had caved in after the first support team member's somewhat lacklustre response.

I understand completely. I'm in the same boat. I've done it all and host multiple sites. Defiantly don't want to lose the time switching to another host. I've had to before. Not hard, just brain drudgery and a total loss of time.
