Beachside sunset; Odaiba, Tokyo

This looks great big. The original is 1560 wide. This was the first shot I took on my little trip down to Odaiba with my son yesterday. I intended to walk straight to the old fort at the end of the beach, but couldn’t really resist shooting this beautiful view of the sunset from the beach. I especially like the way the curve of the beach opposes the curve of the clouds in the sky above.

The stitching was a little off. There is a spot on the sand in the middle of the panorama where, although the footprints and everything else match up ok, the line of the wet sand looks a little weird. I have been using PTGui to stitch a lot of the panoramas I have been doing recently and was getting pretty happy with how it was dealing with HDR blending and stitching. But, it had big problems dealing with 7-frame bracketed sets of two scenes. The HDR blending was awful and the panoramas were very odd. So, went back to doing the blending in Photomatix and the stitching in Photoshop. It works pretty well so I may stick with that for now and return to PTGui when I have the patience.

Nikon D300
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 @ f/6.3
7-frame bracketed burst, with 1-stop spacing
Blended using Photomerge in Photoshop.
Contrast tweaks, dodging, burning, slight cross-balance change and tonal contrast hike in Photoshop.

Yes, on Sunday... the beach and the area to the right of the beach which is an old fort. The view from that place is on this shot: www.flickr.com/photos/alfiegoodrich/4053145340/in/set-721... Should be a fun shoot! ;-)

Your latest shots are pretty awesome. The dynamic range you are able to capture while still maintaining an image of the highest quality is very impressive. I see you've been processing your latest shots somewhat on the darker side, and being run through Photomatix I would think brings out considerable noise...at least such is the case in my experience. How are you dealing with this? Or are you not experiencing much noise in the darker parts of your images?
