After shooting in Myanmar, in 2018, on a movie directed by Daishi Matsunaga, I was asked by him to shoot stills on another short film he was directing. This time the journey took me to Mexico.
Daishi-san was directing a short film, part of the ‘Cinema Fighters Project’, a short film series created by LDH and starring various of the members of J-Pop groups Exile and J-Soul Brothers.
‘On The Way’ was the third film in the series and was released at the 2019 Tokyo International Film festival.
Starring singer Ryuji Imaichi (今市隆二), ‘On The Way’ is set in Mexico, telling the story of a Japanese man who is spending some time with a Mexican friend. The story centres on the two visiting a migrant centre.
I spent ten days in Mexico, mostly out in the countryside around one migrant centre that is on the frontline of the refugee influx from South and Central America.
Apart from the fact movie jobs are always interesting, getting to work in Mexico and see first-hand the migrant situation there was a wonderful and at the same time very emotional and humbling experience.
I was there shooting promotional stills, a behind the scenes movie and in the end helped making the trailer.
